Autumn: colours, mushrooms and trekking

Monday morning. The heath of summer is over and the kids are back to school after almost three months of holidays. Mummy took advantage of this to do a nice morning walk. I enjoyed the fresh air and the beautiful views. On my way, I met an older couple walking to their finca. I had seen them in town, they had seen me before, so then usually the conversation is about how long we already live here, that our Spanish is so good, that we’re already being considered as Cazalleros. And also about the weather, always. “Ay, que frío” (oh, how cold it is) and “Ay, que calor” (oh, how hot it is) are very often heard. But this time there was something special to talk about. Within a few days, how funny: exactly on the 21st of September, we would have storm and rain. Autumn would begin.

Autumn is a beautiful season here in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla. In the years 2000 and 2001 we had exceptional rainfall, but more often we only have a shower so now and then, and very nice temperatures. Ideal weather for walking and trekking! The landscape turns breathtaking: the trees – except the cork oaks and olive trees – cover the hills with their most beautiful tones of red, brown and yellow. The gold of summer turns green again. It is the season of acorns, chestnuts and mushrooms. So the black pigs are back under the oak trees, the man who we call Salaíta – because the rest of the year he sells “salaítas”, salted almonds – returns with his roasted chestnuts, and the most delicious mushroom dishes reappear on the restaurants menus.

Always, when winter is coming to an end, I always look forward to the summer: long warm evenings and nights in our patio or on the many terraces in town, holidays, many people, a lot of activity. But then again, around this time of year, I enjoy returning to the regular life of winter, with quiet evenings at home, watching television or reading a book, with friends gathering around the “brasero” (a heater under the table), and lots and lots of walking.

Linda
