The Ice Pits of Constantina
Just
recently, a very emblematic building with an imaginitive history was
reopened: "Los Pozos de la Nieve" in Constantina. The name means
"the ice pits" and relates to the period when - long before we had
electric freezer - ice was made here. In 1694 they got the privilege
of his M.R. to produce ice and in 1699 the rebuilding works started
to make two huge and deep pits. Next to the building there is a
valley, where in winter ice was produced in shallow pools. The ice
was stored in the pits and in summer it was packed in straw an
brought by donkeys to the surrounding villages and even to Seville.
Dirk and Dominique, Belgians who already live in Andalusia for
almost 20
years, bought this place in 2000, and restored it in a magnificent and
respectful way. For this they were rewarded with a special mention
from the Europa Nostra Awards 2006 in recognition of a valuable
contribution to the conservation and enhancement of cultural
heritage.
Now the building has been reopened to the public, with two
celebration or exhibition halls and two spacious, tastefully
furnished and decorated apartments.

beautiful views. On my way, I met an older couple...

Rural Tourism at the Beach
Would you like to combine a holiday in the mountains of the Sierra Norte
de Sevilla with a beach holiday in the same style? That certainly is possible! Here
we have a good tip for you.
While on the Mediterranean coast building activities don't seem to stop,
the Spanish Atlantic coast is still pure and with beautiful natural areas.
Last weekend we were in Punta Umbria, close to the city of Huelva.
