Vicente Amigo in Cordoba

He was tired, he said, an exhausting tour with many sleepless nights. But he had come to share emotions with us, he said, and that’s what he did!

I’m a big fan of Vicente Amigo, so when I found out he would be playing the Gran Teatro in Cordoba on the 12th of May, I was one of the first to buy tickets. Cordoba has declared 2006 “Year of Flamenco” with a very interesting program, that you can find on the websites Noches de Embrujo and De Flamenco .

That Friday afternoon we took the car to go to Cordoba, which from Cazalla is a two hours drive. Before the concert, we enjoyed the pleasant weather taking a drink and tapas on one of the many terraces. The “Gran” theatre is not so big as its name wants us to believe. It is a very intimate chocolate box, the audience was remarkable young and so it became an evening with the atmosphere of a home match. Although he was born in Guadalcanal – yes indeed, in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla – the Cordobese consider him “theirs” because his family moved to this city when Vicente was only five years old.

Only walking up the stage, the audience welcomed him with a standing ovation. The first number, a fandango, he played solo, modest but rousing. Then the rest of the group joined him: Blas Cordoba (vocals), José Manuel Hierro (guitar & chorus), Patricio Cámara (percussion & chorus), Paquito González (percussion), Antonio Ramos Maca (bas) and José María Sánchez Cortina (keyboard). Most music came from his last album “Un momento en el sonido”, one of the numbers he dedicated to his great friend El Pele, and the audience went wild when towards the end of the concert this singer came up the stage to join in. It was a fantastic evening, a teriffic concert, Vicente is a “montruo”, a monster, and that is a great compliment here in Spain. Our next appointment with this virtuoso flamenco guitarist is on the 18th of September in Sevilla, where he plays during the Bienal Flamenco Festival.

After the concert, we were invited by friends – Cazalleros who own a hotel in Cordoba – to have a drink there. Walking through Cordoba in the moonlight is dazzling, it is an enchanting city. Near the Plaza de Corredera square, where once bull fights were held, is the Hotel Caza de los Azulejos, highly recommended for your stay in Cordoba. Son Manuel runs the kitchen and you can see that he spent some years in Mexico: his dishes are a fusion between spanish and mexican cuisine. Very special, and what’s more important: delishes!

Because of the many activities in May, amongst others the famous Festival de los Patios, there was not one vacancy in the city, so at one o’clock at night, we went back to our car. Two hours later we fell over in our bed, still dazzled by the many impressions that Cordoba had left in our our heads and hearts.
