Camping Batán de las Monjas is situated in the heart of the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, at the riverside of the river Huéznar, only a few kilometers from San Nicolás del Puerto, in a small valley on the edge of the mountains of the Sierra Morena Sevillana, within the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural park.
San Nicolás del Puerto is the smallest village in the area, with no more than 750 inhabitants, whose main economic activity is agriculture and cattle-breeding. In a magnificent scenery, you will find this village between two rivers, the Huéznar and the Galindón, which both have their springs within the city limits of San Nicolás, “the village with the largest amount of water within the whole Sierra”.
A place that is certainly worthwhile visiting, is the old iron mine in the Cerro del Hierro. The mining activities turned the landscape into a unique environment of tunnels and hills, which makes it one of the best places to practice mountain climbing and -walking within the province of Seville. Starting from the Cerro del Hierro, there is a so called Vía Verde, an old railroad track converted into a walking track through the land of approximately 20 km., that leads past the campsite on to the train station of Cazalla-Constantina.
The camping disposes of approx. 36,000m2 in forest area. A stay on this campsite in the valley of the Huéznar is really like camping in a natural environment; there is no electricity and no telephone lines. There are two tracks that lead to the campsite: from the road Cazalla-San Nicolás passing through the river and then 1 km track to the campsite, or from the Plaza de Espańa in San Nicolás, approx. 4 km. If you travel in a normal passenger car, you will have to take good care when driving on these tracks.
When arriving at Camping Batan de la Monjas, you will see that you are indeed on a very special place; at night the sky above full of stars, the foxes that come to the campsite when it is quiet and sometimes even a wild genet cat. A variety of pray birds, like eagles and vultures. And when winter comes near, you can see the storks coming into the area. The campsite restaurant is known as one of the best in the area, where the typical local dishes are served, chick peas with cod, migas, puchero, variety of Iberian pigs meat, lambs meat and home made deserts. A special reason for many guests to repeat a visit to this campsite.
